Tuesday, October 12,2004. The day after Columbus day. This was a paid holiday for Columbia House employees. Susan and I had lunch at the Golden corral with friends and their grandson, Payton. After a filling lunch, we then proceeded to Deming park. Payton has developed quite a liking for the newly designed playground there.

I must admit that this playground is just short of spectacular. The playground equipment is very sturdily designed and covered with a fiberglass shell. The ground around all of the equipment is covered with a rubberized material which is spongy when stepped on - quite different than the cold, hard ground of my childhood! There is a winding maze of walkways designed for all age groups. Obviously, quite a bit of thought went into the design of this playground. Suffice it to say that young Payton had a very good time as did we all.

Where do I begin? Well, just to bring you all up to date, I'll try to summarize events as of late.

The most present issue was Susan's birthday! We had a little party for her at her Mom's and the food was fantastic! I know of no better cook than RuthAnn. She prepared Stew and Polenta, an old Italian dish consisting of freshly made cornmeal mush (made with yellow cornmeal) over which a rich stew made of tomato sauce with various herbs is combined with stew beef and the entire mixture is sow-cooked for several hours. When ready to eat, a slice of the hot Polenta is placed on a plate, followed with a thin slice of brick cheese, then that is then smothered with the stew! I bought Susan a new outfit - a pair of black jeans and a reapberry long sleeve cotton top with a wide turtleneck. Now if only everything will fit. Oh, I also found some cat earrings and couldn't leave without a box of Gloria Vanderbilt cologne. If only Fanny May was still in business in Terre Haute! I did find out that the company is still alive and re-opened 6 stores in the Chicago area and I was able to order a pound of Pixies about 2 months ago.

You can't really appreciate it unless you've had it. Dessert was another specialty - Chocolate mayonnaise cake topped with peanut butter icing - a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. I actually ate 3 helpings of the stew and polenta! I couldn't help myself!

Sam finally got a job working for a temporary labor agency and is presently assigned to DADC (Sony) - they make CD's and DVD's here in Terre Haute. If things work out OK, Sam may end up with a permanent job at DADC (God, I hope so!)

Today is soup bean day. Another favorite of mine that I am usually not allowed to eat because of the extra potassium and phosphorus, but supposedly the beans have been soaked overnight and much of the bad stuff has been leeched out of the beans. A big bowl of beans with horseradish and onions with a big slab of corn bread on the side - one of my all time favorites.

later!
